If there has been a winner of 2020, it has been gin. In what seems a crazy statistic (considering pubs and bars have been shut for most of this year) Brits bought 10 million more bottles of gin this year than during the same period in 2019. And well, if that means more people getting into gin, then what’s not to love!? Our gin tasting with a twist AKA an online gin tasting could be just the tonic for many this new year as the latest lockdown rumbles on! Gin tasting online is a fantastic way to do something together that is fun and educational, reinforce team cohesion at a time when it is vitally needed (with so many of us still working from home), or just learn something new about a range of different gins.
For gin lovers, there is no better way to spend an hour. We have been running our spirit tasting masterclasses for years, as both private and corporate events. However, the new norm dictates that many of these events need to take place online to comply with new social and company rules. How long these rules will last, nobody knows, but why let that stop you enjoying your life? Sure, many of these things are better in person – but carrying them out via video call doesn’t mean they are bad.
Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we can still see all of our friends, family, or colleagues – and share our experiences and thoughts in the same way. What’s more, you can control exactly what people see – so if you don’t want to get dressed from the waist down – don’t! Just remember not to stand up during the video call or you’ll have people spitting their gin out! And we cannot condone such waste!
In fact, there is much to love about an online gin tasting compared to the in-person kind. We send out everything you need (apart from the glasses), direct to your door. The gin box will contain 50ml of 5 gins of different varieties as well as a 200ml bottle of craft tonic water, and various garnishes packed in biodegradable, sealed bags. All you need to add is a little ice, some small glasses for tasting, and a long glass for the gin and tonic to come!
What does an online gin tasting actually entail then? We always find its best to kick off these group sessions with a little introduction from everyone, and of course your host – the gin expert! Guests will then be taken through each of the 5 gins, with the host explaining everything from the varying production techniques to the characteristics and unique ingredients used to develop the different flavours. As long as you don’t drink all the gin too quickly, you’ll be an adept and educated gin drinker yourself an hour later.
It’s amazing how such small changes to the process by the gin distiller can equal such a huge change in the finished product. Everything from the design of the still, the locality of the water used, and the selection of botanicals will all have grand implications. Be prepared to find out all these industry secrets and more in our gin tasting with a twist.
